Side knee pain is commonly caused by osteoarthritis ("wear-and-tear arthritis"), injuries to the collateral ligaments, tears to the meniscus, or sprains. If the cartilage in your knee is injured you won't have cartilage pain because cartilage doesn't contain nerves.
